Rev. Leslie K. Lew, age 57, went to be with his heavenly father, Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at his home in Muskegon. He was born on May 6, 1959 in Brooklyn, New York to Ben-Zion David Lew and Esther (Chenkin) Lew.
Rev. Lew has served as Senior Pastor of Lakeside Baptist Church since 2007. Pastor Lew was born into the home of Jewish believers in Jesus Christ as the Messiah of Israel. Pastor Lew’s parents were Holocaust survivors who, after moving the United States, heard the Gospel message and received Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. Pastor Lew’s parents felt the call to bring the Good News of the Messiah to the Jewish people, moving to the Detroit area and began the Hope of Israel ministry. Pastor Lew accepted Jesus as a young child at a children’s Bible study held at the Hope of Israel. Growing up, he always felt a tug at his heart, a sense that God was calling him into ministry.
Rev. Lew did his undergraduate study in music at Wayne State University in Detroit, where he served as Assistant Conductor to the head of the Choral Department. It was at Wayne State that Leslie met his future bride, Elissa, who as a vocal major, sang in the mixed voice ensembles with Leslie. They found that they could make beautiful music together, and were married in February 1984.
Rev. Lew went on to work full time at the Hope of Israel serving as Director of Outreach and Publications. He helped produce the Hope of Israel television broadcast and served as host and teacher of the Hope of Israel radio program. Leslie extended his theological training in Bible and Theology at William Tyndale College, leading to graduate studies at Ashland Theological Seminary, where he earned a Master of Arts in Christian Ministry.
Following his ministry at the Hope of Israel, Leslie served for thirteen years as Minister of Music and Christian Education at the First Presbyterian Church in Trenton, Michigan. He also served as Associate Pastor of Worship and Music at First Baptist Church of Pontiac. Rev. Lew served as Associate Pastor and Minister of Music at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Ludington, before coming to Lakeside Baptist Church.
Rev. Lew was an avid lover of choral music and enjoyed Christmas, Frankenmuth, and extreme weather documentaries, but foremost was always the time spent with his family.
Please continue to pray for Pastor Lew family: his loving wife of 33 years, Elissa; his children, Juliana Rachel Love Lew and Ross Lew; his sister, Barbara Lew (Adrian) Parrado; his niece, Gretchen and nephews, Brandon and Shawn. Pastor Lew was preceded in death by his parents.
Also please pray for the Lakeside Baptist Church Family as they grieve the loss of their spiritual leader.
“Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.” I Thessalonians 4:13-14
