One of my favorite books of all time is The Practice of the Presence of God, by Brother Lawrence. In that book, Brother Lawrence says, “That we should establish ourselves in a sense of GOD’s Presence, by continually conversing with Him. That it was a shameful thing to quit His conversation, to think of trifles and fooleries.” As we begin 2018 I am confronted in a fresh way with the amount of time we spend focusing on “trifles and fooleries” that distract us from God’s presence. We watch too much T.V., we spend too much time on Social Media and the computer, and we spend our money on things we don’t really need. Believe it or not, even the church itself can distract us from God’s presence. What if instead, our whole existence was so ”established” in the presence of God, that it changed everything; our personal lives, our families, our churches, and even our communities?
This January, over 30 Converge MidAmerica churches are joining with over 150 churches from across Converge to spend 21 days re-engaging with the Lover of Our Souls through prayer and fasting. How it pleases the heart of God when His church seeks hard after Him in prayer. We are praying with you and your church, that God would draw you ever closer to His presence as you seek to spread the gospel of Jesus to your communities and beyond. Imagine what He might have in store for us as a movement of churches as we humbly come before Him in prayer?
One of the ways we want to come together during this month of prayer and fasting is to spend a short time each week praying together as pastors. So on three Thursday mornings (January 11, 18 and 25th) at 10am, we will be meeting together on a Zoom call to pray. Each prayer time will last for 30 minutes, and will be led by one of us from Converge MidAmerica, as well as two other pastors. You will also have an opportunity to share your own requests through the chat feature, and we will commit to praying for those requests during and after our times of prayer. Below you will find all the specifics of how to join that call. You will see that you can join by computer or telephone as we want this to be as simple and productive as possible.
We hope many of you will join us for this short, simple, yet powerful time together in prayer. We trust that instead of it being a distraction in your day it might be a 30 minute reminder to keep yourself “established” in the presence of God.
